Who we are

Tools, not charity.

Friends of La Mosquitia is a Swedish non-profit association supporting the Indigenous Miskito communities of La Mosquitia, Honduras. It works closely with Paskaia, the Swedish company restoring the forest landscape together with those same communities.

The work is practical: mobility, schooling and everyday wellbeing. Every project is decided together with the communities, and where the work can be done locally it is paid for locally.

Mobility

The bicycle project

La Mosquitia is flat, roadless and cut off from the rest of Honduras by jungle. Villages are far apart, and in the rainy season the bicycle is the only vehicle that can be carried across a stream when the bridges give way.

The bikes are donated in Sweden, partly dismantled to fit a container, around 300 per load, and reassembled and serviced on arrival by local young people who are employed for the work.

The fire brigades get them first, so they can reach a fire before it spreads, then school children, then families. What a sponsor funds is the freight, since the bikes themselves are given.
